Welty and her mother built and tended the garden over decades. In it she did all her writing, in an upstairs bedroom. The Eudora Welty House at 1119 Pinehurst Street in Jackson, Mississippi was the home of author Eudora Welty for nearly 80 years. Beginning in 1957, and over the course of more than forty years, Welty donated materials to the department, primarily literary manuscripts and photographs. The collection includes manuscripts, letters, photographs, drawings, essays, and film and video footage that spans Welty’s entire life. The Eudora Welty Collection at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History is the premier collection of Eudora Welty materials in the world and one of the most varied literary collections in the United States.
Founded in 1999, the Welty Foundation works with the 4 Department of Archives and History in achieving its goals of celebrating the legacy of Eudora Welty, enhancing appreciation of her work, and encouraging reading and the efforts of young writers. Supporting ongoing and high quality research is part of the Eudora Welty Foundation’s mission. The recipient will be announced in early spring. The deadline to apply is January 18, 2011. The stipend may be used for travel, housing, and other expenses during the Welty Fellow’s stay in Jackson. “Both the Welty Foundation and MDAH want to nurture a long-lasting interest in Welty’s life and work.” “We’re delighted to partner with the Welty Foundation in this extraordinary opportunity for young scholars who need the time and support for in-depth research,” said Julia Marks Young, director of the MDAH Archives and Record Services Division. Established by the Eudora Welty Foundation and the Department of Archives and History, the $1,000 fellowship will be awarded to a graduate student for research within the department’s Eudora Welty Collection.
