Welty and her mother built and tended the garden over decades. In it she did all her writing, in an upstairs bedroom. The Eudora Welty House at 1119 Pinehurst Street in Jackson, Mississippi was the home of author Eudora Welty for nearly 80 years. Beginning in 1957, and over the course of more than forty years, Welty donated materials to the department, primarily literary manuscripts and photographs. The collection includes manuscripts, letters, photographs, drawings, essays, and film and video footage that spans Welty’s entire life. The Eudora Welty Collection at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History is the premier collection of Eudora Welty materials in the world and one of the most varied literary collections in the United States.

Founded in 1999, the Welty Foundation works with the 4 Department of Archives and History in achieving its goals of celebrating the legacy of Eudora Welty, enhancing appreciation of her work, and encouraging reading and the efforts of young writers. Supporting ongoing and high quality research is part of the Eudora Welty Foundation’s mission. The recipient will be announced in early spring. The deadline to apply is January 18, 2011.
